Curacao was one of the first countries in the world to pass a law that recognizes the electronic signature on electronic transactions. Meaning, if a transaction takes place on a server based on Curacao, in a dedicated E-zone, The Netherlands Antilles Tax Authorities assumes the transaction took place on Curacao and therefore any profit on the transaction is taxed with a flat 2% profit tax (when profit is generated through the sale of goods or services to companies located outside the Netherlands Antilles). E-zone companies are also exempt from VAT (when providing services to companies outside the Netherlands Antilles) and import duties.

Curacao had a good reason for passing this law, as Curacao has a long standing tax treaty with Holland and Norway (Mexico & Spain are to follow) to avoid double taxation. Meaning, once profit has been taxed in Curacao, other Countries can no longer apply their tax.

The ‘Curacao route’ is a well-known and through the sale of goods or services to companies or consumers outside the Netherlands anti accepted tax treaty. The main Company (Holding) does not have to be located in Holland or Norway, a subsidiary will do. Over 20.000 (foreign owned) companies are registered on Curacao, mainly for these purposes.
